5 Things to Consider When Choosing an Awning for Your Home

by Martha Reed

The right awning can give you a comfortable space all year round. Picking the right awning, however, can be daunting as there are numerous varieties to choose from. Here are a number of factors to consider.

Material

Different materials give different looks and also require different kinds of maintenance. The most common materials are aluminium and outdoor fabric. Fabrics are versatile in their range of colours but require more maintenance whereas aluminium is sturdy but gives little room for customization in terms of colour and design.

Flexibility

You can choose stationary or retractable awnings. Awnings that can be rolled up and are retractable allow more control. They are especially useful for decks and patios as they can be adjusted when not in use. In addition, advanced models adjust automatically through the use of sun and wind sensors. Retractable awnings are ideal for vacation homes as they allow guests to enjoy maximum relaxation.

On the flip side though, retractable awnings are not as strong as the freestanding ones and can't withstand heavy rains and wind. During bad weather, it is advisable that you retract them to prevent damage. Freestanding awnings, on the other hand, are stronger and effectively segment a place.

Size

The size is dependent on the function as well as the space you intend to use it on. A small awning can serve as a decorative piece at the entrance whereas a bigger awning provides shade and coverage to your outdoor space.

Colour

Choose the colour based on your home's overall look.  The awning should not only be functional but beautiful to look at as well. It is also important to note that lighter colours reflect sunlight thus blocking heat. This thus creates a cooler space compared to when a darker colour is used. With the right choice of colour, an awning can give your home an elegant look.

Style

There are numerous styles to suit your taste. The style is not only dependent on your aesthetic preferences but also on functions such as drainage, weight requirements, and ventilation. There are many designs such as traditional straight edges, dome-style and waterfall among others. An architect can help you determine the ideal style for your home.

Awnings come in different styles, sizes, and colours. A good choice of awning can transform your outdoor space and add value to your home. Pick the awning that meets your purpose best and one that adds an aesthetic appeal to your home..
